Welcome To Base Camp X

Come join us around the fire at Base Camp and take part in a truly unique brand experience that will touch upon legacy, handmade quality and inspired design; Design tested and proven in the extreme conditions of the Canadian Forest.

BCX sits at the water’s edge on a secluded tract of Canadian Shield. Quartz laden granite cuts the property in long twisting ridges while huge windblown pines tower over all… Hardwoods whisper in the breeze and sway in unison making up the oldest parts of the forest… This is my home in the woods, my inspiration, my Base Camp.

Where is Your Base Camp?

That is the question I want you to seriously consider. Is it like mine? Can it be found among the towering pines of Ontario? Possibly your Base Camp is floating among the thunderous waves of southern California or perched high in the passes of the Rocky Mountains. Urban or wild… the choice is yours to make – start your journey and stake a claim.

Base Camp can be anywhere…where is yours?

My Story

This journey begins in a place where X marks the spot. My first X was among the pines in Algonquin Park, Ontario… a true wonderland of history, legend, forest and lake. As a boy, each summer, my father would take me on a canoe trip with his friends and their sons. We would fish, swim, paddle, portage and set camp. Dad, who was about 35 at the time, taught me to love the forest, respect nature and observe with stealth from a distance. There was also something else my father taught me in Algonquin Park…

A code.

The code of man. The principles which make a boy into “a man”. Qualities which engender respect and beget leadership. My father’s code was passed on to me around the campfire that was fueled by the wood hewn by our axes. That campfire that burned under the stars on those same trips is still the most powerful image from my childhood.

Algonquin Park became my first Base Camp X.

At 8 years old, I was already confident in the bush and could wield an axe with some proficiency. I followed my father’s footsteps and attended a summer tripping camp. It was on Canoe Lake at The Taylor Statten Camps in Algonquin Park that I would spend my summers on canoe trip, learning and building the bonds of friendship. Many of those friendships exist to this day and continue to inspire me. There were certain individuals that guided us as staff and influenced our views and ultimately my stance on leadership. Leading from the front and learning by doing. While only teenagers at the time, the impact that these young leaders had on me was crucial to my development within that vast wilderness theatre.

Long after camp, school and a stint in the Canadian infantry – With axe in hand my father & I felled timber, hauling it on our shoulders to the future site of my log cabin. With much sweat and a bit of blood, the walls rose high. My home in the woods became reality. A hand-hewn log cabin cut from my very own forest and done so with a cherished Double Bit axe.

The time has come to share my experiences and create a network of collective Base Camps around the world… and I will do it with an axe.

In the spring of 2009 I co-founded Best Made Company and tested the first of many axes at Base Camp X. It was here that we applied Courage, Compassion, Fortitude and Grace as ways to inspire and then shared it with the world. In the spring of 2010 Base Camp X was officially founded to support people around the world seeking products that will remind them of their own Base Camp … the creation of a window through which you can gaze into the future or past.
